Course Description:

This course taught the characteristics of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). It described the evaluation process, differential diagnosis, and the selection of appropriate targets and goals for intervention. Multiple treatment approaches for CAS were discussed with a specific focus on cueing strategies and hierarchies. Ideas for functional play-based instruction using a motor-planning approach was provided.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will describe multiple treatment approaches for CAS.

  • Participants will apply cueing strategies to support a motor planning approach to therapy.

  • Participants will compare and contrast intervention for a child with CAS vs. traditional sound based therapy.

  • Participants will describe diagnostic criteria for CAS and the components of informal assessment.

  • Participants will analyze target selection for the treatment of CAS.

Presenter Biography:

Jen Bjorem, M.A, CCC-SLP

Jennie received her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Saint Louis University and graduated from Truman State University with her master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in May 1999. She has a great understanding from a parent perspective as she has a young child with special needs. She is the owner of Children’s Therapy Services in Overland Park, Kansas. Jennie’s area of expertise is in early intervention birth through 5, parent education and childhood apraxia of speech. She has carried a caseload of 24 children with CAS for the past 5 years. Jennie is recognized for her advanced training and expertise in Childhood Apraxia of Speech by Apraxia Kids. She has presented at the Apraxia Kids national conference, ASHA, ASHA Connect, Bay Atlantic University in Istanbul and around the country. Jennie is the creator of the Bjorem Speech Sound Cues for acquisition of speech and literacy.

Refund Policy for LIVE courses:

If program is cancelled or rescheduled by our organization:

TheraSmart reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a course due to extenuating circumstances, inclement weather, speaker availability, or insufficient registration. You will be notified via email or phone at least 24 hours before the start of the class. Participants will be offered an opportunity to reschedule or a full refund for registration and course fee(s) will be issued to registrants (not to include travel or other costs). TheraSmart liability is limited to the tuition fee only.

If registrant cancels:

A full refund, less a 25% administrative fee will be provided if your refund request is received in writing (by mail or email) at least 14 days prior to the course start date. No refunds will be made after the 14 day deadline. Tuition will be forfeited for no-show or cancellations.

Complaint Policy:

We do our best to address your concerns. Any complaints or grievances must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Please include the name, address, phone number, email, profession of person submitting the complaint or grievance, the title of the CE course, as well as the exact nature of the complaint/grievance. The CEA (continuing education administrator) will make an effort to resolve the complaint to the satisfaction of the complainant. This may include issuance of a credit for another CE course or other action suitable to all parties.
