Course Description:

Dr. Molly Ness provided an overview of the process for building students’ reading comprehension through strategic read alouds. This session taught educators to model their thinking processes using “I'' statements so that children have a strong model for the cognitive and behavioral process of comprehending text. Participants developed the ability to think aloud across varied text, genres, levels.

Target Audience:

SEITs, SLPs, Parents and other preschool providers.

Course Level:

Intermediate Level Course; Assumes participants’ general familiarity with the literature and professional practice in the topic area of reading comprehension. The activity focuses on updating participants’ knowledge, increasing their understanding of concepts and applications, and promoting evidence-based practice.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define a think-aloud

  • Describe how a think-aloud can improve comprehension

  • Explain the 3 step process for the Gradual of Responsibility for comprehension instruction.

  • Integrate ‘I’ language sentence starters to plan effective think alouds to build student comprehension

Presenter Biography:

Molly Ness began her teaching career as a Teach For America corps member and 6th grade teacher in Oakland, California. She is an associate professor at Fordham University. With four books and numerous peer-reviewed articles, her research focuses on reading comprehension, teachers’ instructional decisions, and dyslexia, In 2019, Molly began the End Book Deserts podcast to bring attention to the issue of book access and equity. Molly serves on the Board of Directors for the International Literacy Association and on the elementary advisory panel for Penguin Random House.

Course Completion Requirements:

For 3 CTLEs

Satisfactory completion of the course and the earning of credit is based on attending the entire live webinar, assorted videos and completing a learning assessment . Partial credit will not be offered for this course.

Refund Policy for LIVE courses:

If program is cancelled or rescheduled by our organization:

TheraSmart reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a course due to extenuating circumstances, inclement weather, speaker availability, or insufficient registration. You will be notified via email or phone at least 24 hours before the start of the class. Participants will be offered an opportunity to reschedule or a full refund for registration and course fee(s) will be issued to registrants (not to include travel or other costs). TheraSmart liability is limited to the tuition fee only.

If registrant cancels:

A full refund, less a 25% administrative fee will be provided if your refund request is received in writing (by mail or email) at least 14 days prior to the course start date. No refunds will be made after the 14 day deadline. Tuition will be forfeited for no-show or cancellations.

Complaint Policy:

We do our best to address your concerns. Any complaints or grievances must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Please include the name, address, phone number, email, profession of person submitting the complaint or grievance, the title of the CE course, as well as the exact nature of the complaint/grievance. The CEA (continuing education administrator) will make an effort to resolve the complaint to the satisfaction of the complainant. This may include issuance of a credit for another CE course or other action suitable to all parties.
