Course Description

Attendees learned to scaffold comprehension strategies by using visuals such as video clips and advertisements along with more traditional tools, such as personal annotation. This course prepared students for the ELA Regents by addressing the three types of reading/writing questions that are found there.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course you will be able to

  • Explain to a student how to analyze a text for literary, rhetorical, or argumentative purposes.

  • Apply scaffolding to complex texts to boost comprehension.

  • Demonstrate to students how to annotate, and use annotations to write essays without having to re-read the entire text.

Time Ordered- Agenda

  • 30 minutes: Exploring metacognition

  • 30 minutes: Developing Metacognition

  • 30 Minutes: Literary Analysis

  • 40 minutes: Rhetorical Analysis

  • 40 minutes: Argumentative Writing

  • 10 minutes: Question and Answer

Instructional Methodology

Live lecture, video, interactive discussions, moderated question and answer session.

Presenter Biography:

Debra Sarfaty, ED.D

Dr. Debra Sarfaty received her ED.D. in Literacy Education from Rutgers in 2013. She serves as a high school principal, high school English teacher and an ELA consultant for many schools, primarily YKOP. She is known for her creative pedagogy and the ability to help teachers scaffold skills so that students retain them and are able to apply them across texts and content areas.

This course is applicable to educators, speech pathologists, P3s, and school leaders working Junior High School to High School age students.
