Course Description:

This practical webinar presentation will provide an overview of the acclaimed 'STOP and PLAY' preschool program. Then Sarah will provide more advanced executive functioning strategies to infuse into dramatic play, creative games and schoolwork activities to develop the executive skills of situational intelligence, mental imagination, working memory, self-regulation and flexible thinking.

Course Level:

Intermediate; Assumes participants’ general familiarity with the literature and professional practice in the topic area of executive functions. The activity focuses on updating participants’ knowledge, increasing their understanding of concepts and applications, and promoting evidence-based practice.

Target Audience:

Speech and language pathologists, special educators, classroom teachers, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other professionals who work with children and adolescents in schools, private practice and rehabilitation programs working with students ages 3-8 years old and children with significant developmental delays.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Summarize the relationship between situational awareness, episodic future thinking and executive function skills

  • Apply five interventions to improve students’ future thinking and the related executive function skills of attention, inhibition, self-regulation, and flexible problem-solving.

  • Assess how interventions integrated into a child’s creative play schemes, games and schoolwork can be used to develop the child’s planning skills.

Time-Ordered Agenda

  • 15 minutes: Brief review of the key features of executive function as it relates to forethought and situational awareness

  • 15 minutes: Brief review of the STOP and PLAY executive function curriculum.

  • 45 minutes: advanced treatment interventions to develop attention, working memory, and self-control to support planning, flexible problem-solving, and sustained engagement

  • 35 minutes: Interventions to develop forethought for planning so children think first and then act to practice inhibitory control

  • 10 minutes: conclusions and Q and A Page

Presenter Biography:

Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP has over 25 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment and case management of children, adolescents and adults with language learning disabilities, nonverbal learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, executive dysfunction, Asperger’s disorders and social pragmatics . Her particular specialty is in the assessment and treatment of executive function deficits. Ms. Ward holds a faculty appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions where she provides instruction to graduate level students in the assessment and treatment of individuals with traumatic brain injury and other cognitive communication disorders. A popular speaker, Sarah regularly presents nationally and internationally on the topic of executive functions to a variety of professional and parent organizations, school and lay groups. She has presented to and consulted with over 1400 public and private schools across the United States, Canada and Europe.

Refund Policy for LIVE courses:

If program is cancelled or rescheduled by our organization:

TheraSmart reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a course due to extenuating circumstances, inclement weather, speaker availability, or insufficient registration. You will be notified via email or phone at least 24 hours before the start of the class. Participants will be offered an opportunity to reschedule or a full refund for registration and course fee(s) will be issued to registrants (not to include travel or other costs). TheraSmart liability is limited to the tuition fee only.

If registrant cancels:

A full refund, less a 25% administrative fee will be provided if your refund request is received in writing (by mail or email) at least 14 days prior to the course start date. No refunds will be made after the 14 day deadline. Tuition will be forfeited for no-show or cancellations.

Complaint Policy:

We do our best to address your concerns. Any complaints or grievances must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Please include the name, address, phone number, email, profession of person submitting the complaint or grievance, the title of the CE course, as well as the exact nature of the complaint/grievance. The CEA (continuing education administrator) will make an effort to resolve the complaint to the satisfaction of the complainant. This may include issuance of a credit for another CE course or other action suitable to all parties.
